Not Just a Tea Company
Raising the Vibration of the Nation Through Hydration
Greetings!

When people ask me what I do for a living I typically respond with, "I make tea."  As if it were that simple!

As we have been seeking investment in the past year, many, many other companies have also been seeking funds for expansion.  Sometimes I wonder if our little tea company is worthy of the success we have our eyes on.  The other day, the following article arrived via e-mail and it served as a great reminder to all of us here at the Chai Hut that Heartsong is an essential link in the evolution of our country!  That the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company is cutting edge and that is the reason it has been difficult to find the funds we require to grow.

This article ("Taste for Quick Boost Tied to Taste of Risk") inspires me to keep at it with faith that someone will discover us in the nick of time (now) and offer up the funds we need to raise the vibration of the nation through hydration.  It is time for our country people to evolve their taste for soda and commit to healthful living.  It is time for our country people to consider their shopping as purchasing power and to vote with their dollar for the change they want to see in the world.  Each of us can make a difference, thanks for your continued support!

Friends, I ask you to visualize Heartsong's incredible presence in this country, the demise of the soda industry and the increased health and hydration of people nationwide.  I hope you find the following article as fascinating as I do!

Big LOVE,

Elizabeth Bretko,
Chai Mama

Caffeine Energy Drinks are Bad

The proof is in, again!

Reports from across the nation have been proving that caffeine-packed energy drinks cause more harm than good. Researchers have found incident after incident where drinking these caffeine and chemical packed energy drinks that people report abnormal heart rhythms, sweating, heart palpitations and emergency room visits. Even worse is that these drinks lead to "toxic jock" behavior, prompting risky and aggressive behavior, substance abuse and violence. Here in Oregon, teachers in Tigard recently sent an email alert to all parents informing them that their students "are literally drunk on a caffeine buzz or falling off a caffeine crash."

Spring Re-Cap

This spring has been one of flourishing growth and sales are booming!

Heartsong Pepper Brew sales have already doubled since last quarter!  We know that sales will greatly increase across the Pacific Northwest as the warmer weather sets in and more and more co-ops, stores, cafes, and shops pick up Heartsong.

Heartsong was met with great fanfare and enthusiasm at the Seattle Greenfest, (where the above picture was taken) introducing ourselves to a new city and over 30,000 attendees. This helped with our launch into PCC Natural Markets and Madison Market. We look forward to continuing our mission of hydrating the nation, one city at a time....

      Meanwhile, s
ales in New Seasons Marketsin Portland have been steady. The New Seasons Concordia and Arbor Lodge are moving a stellar amount of product, we offer heartfelt thanks to those Portland neighborhoods.... keep on rockin it, Portland!

We are excited to announce that R & K Foods, Inc. is our Washington distributor. They have been an integral part of our current growth and we look forward to a long and prosperous relationship.

We are equally excited to announce that Del Sol Distribution is our new Northern California distributor!  They have already launched our brews into Chico and we look forward to growing with them.  A heartfelt "Thank You," goes to Jerry Krug Jr., who is an amazing Heartsong representative and is just an all around cool guy!

The brewery at the Chai Hut is full swing! We are brewing regularly and consistently. It is such a joy to see the brewery raging! Bottles get put on the line and a conveyer belt takes them to the 4-head filling machine and seconds later, they are filled with Heartsong goodness. From there, they are guided to the capping machine so the goodness can be contained until it reaches your palette. The bottles then take a little bath to cool down. Once cool and dry, they are dressed with Heartsong Chai or Pepper Brew labels and are then ready to be shipped to their destination: YOU!

Come visit the Chai Hut and ask for a tour. See you soon!

Summer Festivals with Heartsong
goddess w/ holly
We at the Chai Hut have been preparing for summer since, well, last summer. This year, we are scaling back a bit, opting to focus on brewing and sales rather than gallivanting the coast serving at the hippest festivals. Doing the festival circuit is a full-time job for a full crew of people alone, but we have a brewery run! Maybe next summer we'll go to a few more, but for now, here is our festival itinerary:

High Sierra Music Festival
July 3-6, 2008
Quincy, CA
"An intimate yet first-rate festival nestled in Northern California's majestic mountain range, the High Sierra Music Festival is a unique four-day music and camping festival that features an eclectic and boldly creative span of music from acoustic singer-songwriters and down-home bluegrass to high-energy funk and skillfully improvised jazz, rock and live electronica." Some of this year's highlights include: March Fourth Marching Band, Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mike Gordon, Bassnectar, Charlie Hunter TrioMichael Franti & Spearhead, Lynx, and Jamie Janover, just to name a few.
Heartsong will be hydrating the musicians during the day and serving to the masses at night in the late-night area. Java GoGo will be selling our chai! Bring your cup!

Oregon Country Fair
July 11-13, 2008
Veneta, OR
"The Oregon Country Fair creates events and experiences that nourish the spirit, explore living artfully and authentically on Earth, and transform culture in magical, joyous and healthy ways."
Heartsong will be a "roaming vendor." Look for our carts throughout the fair!

Emerg+N+See
July 18-20, 2008
Salem, OR
"The Emrg+N+See Festival is one of the only Oregon-based, three-day events dedicated to showcasing: emerging underground electronic music acts and producers from a broad scope of genres, digital & traditional media art, performance, and independently created fashion & products."
As the dates have shifted to the weekend after OCF, we have decided, sadly, not to vend this year. However, we are still a sponsor because we LOVE this amazing event and all the outstanding people who participate.

Burning Man
August 25 - September 1, 2008
Black Rock City, NV
"Mission Statement" Our mission is to produce the annual event known as "Burning Man" and to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society. We believe that the experience of Burning Man can produce positive spiritual change in the world. To this end, it is equally important that we communicate with one another, with the citizens of Black Rock City and with the community of Burning Man wherever it may arise. Burning Man is radically inclusive, and its meaning is potentially accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, embodied ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship. Finally, in order to accomplish these ends, Burning Man must endure as a self-supporting enterprise that is capable of sustaining the lives of those who dedicate themselves to its work. From this devotion spring those duties that we owe to one another. We will always burn the Man."

Basura Sagrada: Burning Man Temple 2008
"Basura Sagrada is a temple constructed entirely from burnable trash, recycled materials, and the tossed-off detritus of American society. Meticulously detailed, the temple will be a precious space created from non-precious materials. By replacing the gold and marble surfaces of traditional temples with aluminum can adornments and cardboard spires, we hope to inspire others to see everyday trash as beautiful, to save everyday trash and use it-not because it is responsible or right or necessary to recycle (although that is certainly important), but because people are excited about the materials and medium."
Basura Sagrada Fundraiser
June 12, 2008, San Francisco, CA at the DNA Lounge

Burners Without Borders
"Burners Without Borders (BWB) coalesced from a spontaneous, collective instinct to meet gaping needs where existing societal systems were clearly failing... Following the 2005 Burning Man event, several participants headed south into the Hurricane Katrina disaster area to help people rebuild their devastated communities. They focused their initial efforts on rebuilding a destroyed Vietnamese temple in Biloxi, Mississippi. After several months there, that job done, they moved to another needy Mississippi community, Pearlington, to continue to work hard -- gifting their time -- to help those in need.
Every summer Burning Man participants (aka Burners) meet in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada to re-engage with our community, and to celebrate shared values of radical self-expression and self-reliance. We celebrate the power of community, honor the importance of art, and enjoy the immediacy of experience. Then we leave - without a trace of our having been there.
But that experience and those values don't get left behind in the desert. They inform who we are, and how we interact with the larger world around us. BWB is a manifestation of what can happen when we take our values off the playa and out into the rest of the world."
Heartsong has the incredible opportunity to participate with both of these fabulous projects, merging our waking reality with the burn.  Our Goddess will be set up on the Esplanade at the Burners Without Borders and will be serving their events.  Meanwhile, our mobile hydration stations will serve the city from the temple.  So this provides huge incentive to everyone to travel the playa with their cup this year.... you never know when you might encounter a Heartsinger who wants to quench your thirst!

Heartsong Website and Store

We have been working on the Heartsong website and store for sometime now. There have been a few bumps along the road but the folks at StopPhysics.com have been stellar with support and they really know their stuff.

Our on-line store is up and functioning smoothly. You can purchase Pepper Brew Love Jugs or 12-ounce bottles or Heartsong Chai spice blends in bulk or 4-ounce boxes.

We expect a completely new website design this summer.
Keep checking back!

I have been attempting this update for some time now, but words to express the now of Heartsong are elusive. This edition of our newsletter is spoken from my heart to you, thank you for feeling these words.

April 20 marked the 8th anniversary of Heartsong Chai, now the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company and the Chai Hut.  Wow! Eight years of focusing my wit and spirit uninterrupted, into one project!  My parents have been participating in Heartsong a thousand ways for seven years.  Chad has been co-creating the Heartsong vision for four years.  Neal has been working with us for over a year now. Hundreds of friends and family have participated actively in countless ways.  The result of our collective grass roots effort is this beaming beacon of light known as the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company.

Heartsong is a mystical brand of strong and nourishing brews.  Hands down, our brews are the most healthful beverages on the market in the Pacific Northwest.  As we strive to raise the vibration of the nation through hydration, we continually grow into deeper understanding of this mission, allowing us to hone and enhance the ways we do it.

Here's how we do it: We handcraft an incredible product line of certified organic bottled teas. We offer healthful alternatives to soda, alcohol and coffee.  We are an evolutionary eco-business governed by permaculture design principals.  We juice the citrus for the Heartsong Pepper Brews in house.  We grind Heartsong Chai's spices by bicycle.  We've got a reclaimed fast food dinosaur turned vibrant Chai Hut. Our mobile hydration stations are prayer-formance art installations. The Chai Hut and our business alliances are measurable community enhancement mechanisms.neal-on-bike

And right now Heartsong is rocking the scene just like we said we would.  In December we identified the accounts we'd need to get for our sales to meet our break-even projections.   We launched them all in the first four months of 2008.

In March, we launched into ten new accounts in Portland.  In April, we introduced ourselves to Seattle through exhibiting at the Seattle Green Fest and simultaneously launching into eight stores.  Also in April, we launched into Northern California through four stores in Chico and the Sacramento Co-Op.  Our first Whole Foods Account launched also, the downtown Portland store.  Our second Whole Foods, the Portland Bridgeport location, launches this week!

Last week, the Whole Foods buyer called to tell us he is really excited to carry our brews.  In Seattle, an impromptu sales call at Madison Market, revealed our brews already on the shelf there!  Our days are auspicious and profound like this.  Both the company and products have a powerful affect on people. With each of the above accounts activated now, these sales will soon sustain our company.

Launching this Chai Hut: formulating the concept, renovating the building, scaling up our production, building our microbrewery, launching our cafĂ© and mobile hydration stations and growing our accounts in accordance with our abilities, has been demanding and expensive.  We dove in without funding and two years later, we are feeling it!  As sales settle into a reliable flow, we will soon meet and then exceed our break-even projections.  But there is a very real meanwhile and it has the potential to crush our brand new wings.

With faith that this project will attract the heart and expertise of a solid investor we have done everything possible to keep producing, to keep opening the doors. For the past few months we have been going into debt by the day.  Meanwhile, we've been circulating and pitching our business plan, our brews and our story throughout the Rogue Valley, our family and friends networks and the food industry.  In this two years we've been building the Chai Hut and seeking an investor, Dagoba Chocolate sold to Hershey's, Burt's Bees sold to Clorox, Tom's of Maine sold to Colgate, Izze Soda sold to Pepsi, Honest Tea sold 40% of their company and two seats on their board to Coca Cola, our local Maranatha Nut Butter Company sold to Hain-Celestial and our local Pyramid Juice Company (established in 1971) folded.

Just in the nick of time in April, Heartsong was granted a loan from the Daedalus Foundation. To facilitate our success, this non-profit foundation has also agreed to accept donations earmarked for Heartsong. When the donation sum matches their $10,000 loan, they will write us a check. So, if you feel inspired to donate to this non-profit on Heartsong's behalf, please write a check to "The Daedalus Foundation".

Mail it to: The Daedalus Foundation PO Box 146 Boulder, CO 80306

Please include your address, so they can send you a receipt.  Please also contact Crystal Arnold the secretary at crystal1320@gmail.comto let her know the donation is en route.

With several automatic loan payments and payroll due this Thursday, May 15, these donations are urgently required. Prompt action is appreciated!

While this $10,000 is immediately helpful, the sum we require to launch this thing right and proper is much greater. With working capital to plug our leaks and tighten our systems, we will be a solvent company within one fiscal quarter.  Each day that goes by without this working capital is dangerous, excruciating and miraculous.

As the financial jerry-rigging that is constantly required to sustain this beast of a Chai Hut subsides, all of us at Heartsong will be able to focus more fully on our work.  I know that I will carry significantly less stress in my body, which has been managing a huge amount of stress for a long time now.  I have been working incessantly since we signed the lease at the Chai Hut exactly two years ago.  My willingness to creatively fund this project while we sought investors, has most recently led me to an uncomfortable place of impasse and reckoning.  The stress of our inability to pay the bills is taking an incredible toll on my body. To take time to be nourished and recharged is essential for me now.  I have got to take a break.  Both Heartsong and my self require this break to ensure beneficial forward movement.  I have an opportunity to go to Kauai in June, but I need help facilitating this dream into reality. If you'd like to help, please call me!

I speak for Neal, Chad and myself when I say that we love what we do and that's why we do it.  We love the affect that the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company and the Heartsong Brews have on people.  We are actualizing the evolution of the food industry in the US and it pleases us to do so.  We feel we are onto something here and we want it to grow and grow and grow.  We have invested our selves on every level into co-creating this company, which is why it feels so darn good to so many people!  Clearly, we can't keep working this hard without financial stability. It is of the utmost importance that investors join us now.  With the great hope of aligning with someone who activates a participatory role in our company, we send this newsletter out into the cyber world.

We have a lot to offer an investor.  For a copy of our most recent prospectus, send an e-mail request to chaimama@heartsongchai.com.  Also, feel free to reply to this message with your perspective I'd appreciate it very much. If you feel moved to forward this along to others, please do so and thank you.

Wow!

It is barely a word to begin to describe the last four years of my life working in the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company alongside the Chai Mama and taking on the title of "The Chai Guy."

I began as a volunteer, moving to Elizabeth's house from the mountains of the Little Applegate Valley in southern Oregon. I had a great room over looking the Jacksonville brewery, a converted garage in her backyard, in trade for my time and energy, which was mostly the Farmer's Market, deliveries, and brewing.  Now I am a proud owner and can ride my bike to the Chai Hut form my apartment in Ashland. Some might say that I'm "living the dream." It's true, in many ways. I am my own boss, get to work alongside my best friend, and I am constantly thanked for "what I do." I had no idea that my environmental policy degree would carry me so far!

But living this dream is not without its challenges. I am sure that a business degree would come in quite handy, but then again, I am learning far more from experiencing business than any textbook could teach me, which I often find myself reading in my (very limited) spare time. I am also lucky to have some excellent mentors.

In the last four years, I worked to bring Heartsong to Eugene. This was the first time that Heartsong flew the coop, so to speak, leaving the Rogue Valley, much like a child off to college. It was not too long after that we found ourselves brewing up a storm in Jacksonville for some co-ops in Portland. It quickly became quite apparent that our demand far, far exceeded our ability to supply. Always a good problem to have in business, right? This fork in the path led us to a larger building, what would become the Chai Hut.

When it came time to move, we simply packed up and moved, more or less, with big wide eyes, smiling faces, and a scrub brush in our hands. We thought that the Chai Hut would be the solution. Which, in many ways it has been and is, but the path we chose has been a little rocky and has presented many learning opportunities as well as challenges, most of which consisted of financial matters.  It took quite a bit of time and money just to clean the Chai Hut, never mind the costs and time and learning curve of building a brewery. This has been one of the most exciting things for me. There is a great level of satisfaction and pride I feel when I see the four-head filler pumping Mate Fire or Rooibos Chai (or any brew!) into glass bottles.

And yet, here we crawl toward another fork in the Heartsong path, one way leading to rags, the other way leading to riches. I prefer the path to riches, leaving a swath of hydrated and happy people along the way. The latter is already occurring on a daily basis. Last week I had a customer call and tell me repeatedly how much she loves Heartsong Chai and just this morning, a friend told me how cool he thought Heartsong was as he we discussed our opportunities and choices in life.

The last four months have consisted of monumental growth for Heartsong. As you read above, Heartsong began New Seasons Markets in Portland, PCC Markets and Madison Market in Seattle, accounts in Chico and Sacramento, exhibited at the Seattle GreenFest in April and have been invited back to theOregon Country Fair and will return to the Temple at Burning Man to hydrate the masses. Heartsong is now in Whole Foods Market in Portland. Whole Foods! Our demand continues to grow, but this time, with our brewery up and running, we are ready, willing and more than able to meet that demand.

At the same time, April proved to be the most financially challenging month of Heartsong, ever. May looks like it might have the same challenge, while June looks good and from there on out we have solid traction, we are solvent, and we are growing healthily and steadily, just as perfect as any business model might suggest.

I am excited to experience Heartsong every day in all of its strength and integrity. I am excited to wake up every morning knowing that I am living the dream of working with my friends and being constantly and consistently thanked for my work. I am excited and proud to be a part of a company that can walk it's talk, through challenges and through growth. I am excited to be the Chai Guy.

     In Gratitude & Love,

     Chad

Tales from the Delivery Van
on 01/17/08 02:45 PM

Being able to replenish and introduce Heartsong to all ofthe participating cafes, restaurants and lounges in the valley has given me a unique opportunity to explore our community of Ashland.  Experiencing the “behind the scenes” arena and interacting in such places as the Co-Op and Shop-N-Kart allows me to sense the unity and cohesion that is so crucial for a prosperous environment.  It’s great to see how well our brews are received within the community and this fact alone motivates us to try to provide even more, even better.  It also gives me a chance to see what we, as a food artisan community, have to contribute to the quality of experiencing life here in the Rogue Valley.  Thank you for welcoming us as we brew the revolution.

Heartsong 100 with a 100 Campaign
on 01/03/08 05:52 PM
Dear Friends~

2007 has been a big year for the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company. We moved from the Jacksonville brewery to the Chai Hut in Ashland. We opened the Chai Hut Food Artisans Gallery and Café. We introduced our third Pepper Brew, the Mate Fire. We created "The Goddess" our traveling tea bar. And we built our factory. Meanwhile, we continued serving the regions of Portland, Eugene and Ashland by brewing on the stove in ten-gallon batches and bottling by hand.

We moved to the Chai Hut with one goal: to increase production. But as soon as we moved in, Ashland people began to ask for a teahouse. In response to this demand, the Chai Hut has become a friendly teahouse that promotes organic foods, employs local people, hosts live music, sponsors community meetings, participates in youth internship programs and gives tours.

Our greatest accomplishment this year was the launch of our manufacturing facility. Gone are the days of hand filling and capping every bottle! We now brew in 100-gallon batches and bottle with an automatic filler and capper. With consistent, big batch production, the Heartsong crew is now focused on sales. In December Heartsong products were picked up by Northwest Natural Foods, a Eugene based distributor whose niche is Oregon natural foods. With the help of Northwest Naturals, our products are now available in Bend, Mt. Shasta and at Whole Foods in Portland.

In the past year we've invested heavily into our infrastructure with an eye toward creating a long lasting, profitable local business. These investments have not been free, and we find ourselves in the difficult position of having to reconcile our short-term expenses while our sales numbers catch up with our new capacity. Rather than trying to get expensive loans from multinational banking conglomerates to fill this gap, we turn to you, our community to help us through.

We hope to find 100 people who are willing to offer short-term loans of at least $100. We will use this money carefully as working capital, to purchase ingredients and pay bills. We welcome loans with a one-year pay back and we gratefully welcome gifts also. Success in this fund raising campaign will empower Heartsong to expand sales through consistent production. First Heartsong Brews saturate Portland. Second, sales expand to Seattle. Third, we douse San Francisco.

The people of the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company are both thrilled and grateful to make good tea for the people of Oregon and beyond. We are excited to leap from the solid foundation we've built over this past year, and hope you'll consider joining us on this journey.

We'd love to hear from you!

Loans and gifts can be made on-line or in person at the Chai Hut.

Cheers to a prosperous 2008,

Heartsong Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary at the Chai Hut

Heartsong Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary at the Chai Hut

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company, brewing spicy herbal tonics in the Rogue Valley since 2000, is pleased to announce the successful anniversary of the Chai Hut. To celebrate, the Chai Hut is extending winter hours and offering stellar discounts on mugs of chai in the Café.

The public space of the Chai Hut opened in October of 2006, with a mini dorm fridge and a few upside down shipping boxes for tables. In January, as the result of community demand, the Chai Hut evolved into the Food Artisans Gallery and Café.
Michael O’Shea was hired as a manager and since that time the Chai Hut Food Artisans Gallery and Café has evolved into an Ashland “must see” for tourists and a regular
stop for locals. Highlights include public viewing of the brewery, so people get a real feel for all aspects of food manufacturing, samples of all Heartsong products, free wi-fi, a public computer, and the opportunity to learn about other regional organic foods and the artists who create them.

New to the store in time for the holidays are Artisana Nut Butters, from Berkely California, Living Tea Kombucha from right here in the Rogue Valley and shots of E3 Live, a liquid version of Klamath Blue Green Algae. Art in the form of aprons, shopping bags, and kitchen towels is available from Reclamation Goods, a local company specializing in handmade recycled kitchen arts. The Chai Hut also sells a variety of CDs, as good music is essential in the making of good food. New this month, the Heartsong Pepper Brews are on tap at the Chai Hut, so people can bring clean love jugs back for refill, reducing packaging waste and saving money.

The Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company has been in high demand this summer, serving tea at festivals and launching a real beverage production facility. In June, the Mate Fire, a unique combination of cranberries, Serrano peppers and yerba mate, was unleashed and received with record sales. In July, Heartsong served the Oregon Country Fair for the first year, selling out of everything by Sunday afternoon. By the end of August, the production facility was successfully integrated and brewing 100-gallon batches began, a step up from traditional stovetop 10-gallon batches. In September, the company launched a beautifully redesigned package for the Heartsong Chai Spice Blend Boxes. In October, Northwest Natural Food
Distribution, a Eugene based natural foods distributor picked up the entire line of Heartsong products, greatly expanding access to Heartsong products in Oregon. Northwest Natural Foods also represents several Southern Oregon companies including Pickled Planet Raw Sauerkraut, Katrina’s Salsa, and Rising Sun Farms.

The Chai Hut is located at 2220 Ashland Street in Ashland in a building that looks strangely like a Pizza Hut.

The hours of operation are:Wednesday through Saturday from 8am to 8pm and Sundays from 10-5.
The Chai Hut is closed Mondays and Tuesdays for production. The Chai Hut is also available for rent for meetings, music, and other functions. Please call the Chai Hut at 541-488-5614
for more info and details.
