Tree of the Year Contest

2008 marks Ashland's 21st Tree of the Year contest! This event was created to increase public awareness and appreciation for Ashland's vast and diverse tree canopy, and the benefits these trees provide: energy coserving shade, habitat, erosion control, privacy and aesthetics. Each October the Tree Commission asks residents to nominate their favorite trees.  The Tree Commission selects five trees from the group of nominees. Residents then have the opportunity to vote for their favorite tree from that list in mid-October.

Tree get nominated for various reasons and one of the best parts of the Tree of the Year process is looking through the nomination forms and the reasons why a tree is special.

"In 1993 this tree fell over and instead of removing it the owners buried the exposed roots and let nature take its course" horizontal Walnut on Garfield St.

"Not even a bolt of lightening could lessen the awsome sight of this majestic Sequoia" 2005 Tree of the Year winner at corner of Bush and Almond.

"Wonderful, old, neighborhood tree" 2007 Tree of the Year winner at 122 Helman.

Nominated trees should be visible from the steet and not in a City Park, nominations will be accepted until October 6, 2008.

Nomination forms are available on the City of Ashland website - click here.
