How to Write Restaurant Reviews
on 10/12/07 01:53 PM
When writing a restaurant review, you can break your review into three basic categories: Food, Service and Atmosphere. During your next dining experience, try to rate each of the three categories independently, as well as how each aspect ties in with the other.

Here is a list of questions to keep in mind the next you dine:

Food
  • Do the menu offerings match your expectations? (ex. I ordered a Reuben expecting a closed sandwich with all the fixing spread evenly throughout the bread. Instead, I got a heap of pastrami, kraut and Swiss piled smack dab in the middle of an oversized piece of rye… OR… I ordered a cup of minestrone and was delighted at how fresh all the ingredients tasted. This was no pre-packaged soup.)
  • Was the food cooked to your satisfaction, or per your request? Were the servings ample enough to satiate your hunger?
  • Did the food arrive in the manner it should? Was your soup hot and your salad crisp, for example?
  • How well was the food presented? Was it just a pile of slop on a plate or did the cook throw in some lemon peel curls and a sprig of parsley?

Service

  • How were you greeted and treated upon first stepping through the door?
  • How long did you have to wait for a table/your meal?
  • How sincere was your server? Did the server ask you personal questions just to respond with a vacant smile and a “That’s Great!” or did they truly engage you in small talk?
  • How attentive were your servers? Did they keep your drinks filled and clear your table in a timely fashion? Did they get everything you needed like condiments, crabshell bowls, extra napkins?
  • Did your server make you feel comfortable? What was the server’s general attitude toward their job? Did they treat you like a chore or did they convey a love for their work?
  • Did your server wait for the right times to intrude upon your table? Did they wait until your mouth was empty before approaching your table?

Atmosphere

  • How would you describe the atmosphere? Warm and inviting, stuffy and rushed, bright and open?
  • What features of the dining establishment stick out to you? The photos of celebrities, the hand-painted murals, the plastic red-and-white checkered tablecloths?
  • How would you characterize your fellow diners? Classy and conservative, loud and animated, relaxed and laid-back?
  • Does the terrific atmosphere make up for the lack of quality in the food or service, or vice versa? (ex. Although the food was blander than an old-folks home meal, the laughing buddhas that spit out fortunes at the end of each meal was awesome…well worth the visit!)

When writing your review, remember to consider the type of eatery. You wouldn’t hold a fast food joint up to the same standards as a five-star bistro, and vice versa. The most important thing to do when writing a restaurant review for LocalsGuide is to take note of those aspects of your experience that stood out as excellent! Bon Appetit!

How to Write Movie Reviews
on 10/06/07 12:33 PM
Do you like movies? Don’t know what to write for a review, but you know you really want to share your enthusiasm about it? Here are some quick tips for writing a movie review.
  • Explain the basic plot. Was it a movie about dragons taking over NYC? Or did it dig deep into the human condition?
  • What did you like about the movie: the awesome special effects, incredible acting, the riveting storyline, the haunting soundtrack? This is putting the finger on the pulse of what got you excited about the movie.
  • For an extra touch, stretch and draw cultural comparisons. Explain how the movie seems to coincidentally mirror the such-and-other that is happening in the world today.
  • Throw in some trivia, talking about the past history of either the remakes, movie versions of books, directors, producers and actors filmographies.

Of course, there’s so much more you can accomplish with a movie review, but these are a good start. What’s the last good movie you watched?

LocalGuide has a style all its own. We don’t follow the rules of the mainstream. I mean, sure, with few exceptions, we would always capitalize letters and add commas when needed. Our contributor’s content contains a distinct voice, the kind of voice that is so prevalent in social networks, yet still so missing from major media. Confident, well-humored, informed and fun-loving describe the voice of so many of the LocalsGuide members.

When people contact us, we often try to explain our alternative approach to the style of the story we print. It’s simple really;

  1. We don’t print press releases.
  2. We print articles that reflect that the writer had a good time writing.

In writing your piece, you should always have fun writing it. Feel free to get crazy with your writing. Try to put your finger on the pulse of what got you excited about the story your writing.

Get to the story behind the story. Find what drew you to the story in the first place. Certainly some may get excited about details; however, emotion is usually the driving force behind excitement. Capture what excites you — The car that makes your heart race. The music, the annual events and the people in your community that you just can’t help but love.

If your piece isn’t in the greatest shape according to editorial standards, no worries. We’ll clean it up and make you look like a pro if your post is chosen for print. That’s not to say, though, that you shouldn’t strive for the highest and best in your writing.

You should also consider recruiting the help of many of the talented writers and editors that are among the LocalsGuide members. Just look through profiles and talk to anyone with the word Scrabble in their profile ;) The monthly themes are suggested only, so don’t worry about whether your content matches the themes.

It’s also good to keep in mind that we try to get ahead in producing the publication, so if you want to write about a Thanksgiving turkey in July, go right ahead. We’ll probably have it in the November issue by September. .

Remember, you’ll know when you put your finger on the pulse of the story, because you’ll have fun writing it when you do.

For an example of a writer who had a good time revising his initial submission, check out this blog:

. Focus on the Fun

How to Get Featured in LocalGuide
on 09/30/07 08:10 PM
Here at LocalsGuide, we often hear from folks wanting to know how they can feature their business, practice or organization in the Monthly. Here are a few ways:

Take out an ad — Make it interesting
Post an event — Engage the audience
Blog about your company — Share an insider’s tip
Write a “Day in the Life of…” — Flavor with humor
Hold a Reality Challenge — Put your product to the test
Ask a friend to review your business  — Keep it genuine
Contact a member to review your business — Comp them

You may note that the LocalsGuide staff is not involved in any of the suggestions above. That’s because our unique model emphasizes a form of reporting called Citizen Journalism. We look to our website members to provide the articles that fill the print publication every month. If you have a story to tell, our members are the people you want to tell it.

There’s only one catch:
We choose only the most interesting and engaging content to print in our Monthly publication. Capture our attention with a truly interesting and engaging story, and it might just make it into the next issue of LocalsGuide Monthly.
