-Citizens for Peace & Justice events: For Feb & March
Many of you are new additions to this group email that I send out only a few times a month to alert progressive folks in the Rogue Valley about events and issues of much importance (we think) to you all.  I hope you'll want to remain on this list (it's not a "listserv," just my own email group), but if you want off, hit Reply and tell me so.
Below are three events that CPJ is planning over the next couple of months that we hope you will attend; find out more at www.medfordcpj.org :

1.  Collateral Repair Project, free dinner and the most intensive report yet from Mary Madsen and Sasha Crow, co-directors of the Collateral Repair Project, about their trips to Jordan to work with Iraqi refugees.  A buffet-style dinner will be provided by CPJ members at 6 pm Saturday, Feb. 9th, in Lidgate Hall at the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St.  Then, Mary & Sasha will present an enhanced PowerPoint presentation, including many photos and video footage, of their work with the Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan.  All donations will go to the Collateral Repair Project.  Please download and print and distribute the flyer for the event that is attached to this email.

2.  The "5 Years Is 5 Too Many" Rally & March to mark the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq will be held from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday, March 15th, at Alba Park in Medford.  We'll rally around the gazebo, be inspired by some brief speeches and live music and then we'll march through downtown Medford and back to Alba Park for more music and speeches.  Last March more than 300 of you participated in our "Books Not Bombs" rally and march and the Peace Forum that followed at the Medford Library just before its closure.  We hope all of you will join us on March 15th to show the valley that we still oppose this illegal war and want our troops home NOW!

3.  The 4,000 US soldiers Have Died rally.  To date there have been 3,941 US soldier who have died in Iraq. (Yes, I know the total would be much higher if those who died later in the US of their injuries or illnesses were added to the total.  And yes, I know that the number of Iraqis who have died probably exceeds 1 million though nobody can know for sure.)  We are planning to rally in the small parking lot at the Rogue Valley Mall at 1 pm on the Saturday following the death of the 4,000th.  There will be live music and speeches and then we'll march around the perimeter of the mall, just as we did on January 9th, 2007, after the 3,000th US soldier died in Iraq.  We'll let you know when we are getting close to the time for this march.  US deaths have been averaging about 33 a month for the past three or four months.  It may be that the 4,000th death may happen about the time that our 5th anniversary rally is planned, in which case we'll have one big event, instead of two.

Please let me know if you have questions or want to help with the planning and organization of one or more of these events.  We'll have a planning session at 1 pm Saturday, Feb. 16th, at the Jackson County Democratic Office in Medford.

Yours for peace & justice,  Allen Hallmark  855-2312

-Peace House Film Night: ā€œEscape from Suburbia: Feb 11 7pm @ Peace House
Monday, February 11th  ; 7pm Peace House (543 S. Mountain in Ashland)
FREE
Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream. The film ā€œThe End of Suburbiaā€ introduced the concept of Peak Oil (the point at which world-wide oil production peaks, and after which it declines). Now, in ā€œEscape from Suburbia,ā€ theory gives way to reality as a global debate rages over when demand will outpace supply.  The new film documents the emerging movement of citizens’ groups confronting our addiction to oil and follows individuals from different walks of life as they take on the most dramatic shift in modern history.

Escape from Suburbia is a wake-up call that challenges the illusion of never-ending growth based on the availability of cheap and abundant oil.

-Public Access TV need your help! Please Read and Get involved.
Hey folks, just a quick note to let you know how our brothers and sisters in public access TV land are doing.  They need you to call and email your Congressional offices now -- to tell them to keep public access TV channels strong and local!  Read more to find out what to do.

As many of you know, the big phone and cable companies -- Verizon, Comcast, AT&T and the like -- have been working for years to give state governments -- rather than our local communities -- the power to negotiate video franchises.  These companies, and state governments, have consistently eroded the funding, the channel capacity, and the local determination our communities have over our public access TV stations.  And now, in Michigan, and across the country, these same companies are working to degrade public access TV's signal -- bumping PEG channels from regular analog cable carriage to obscure digital channels in the 900 range.

We need to tell Congress to keep Public Access TV signals strong and equal, and to protect local control over these vital channels!  You can look up your Congressm

As Michael Eisenmenger of http://www.saveaccess.org tells us:  "The move would mean that 'basic' cable subscribers would no longer have access to the local PEG channels, in fact they would need to subscribe to more a expensive digital cable service tier and pay for an additional charge for a digital cable set-top box."

Congress is holding a hearing on this important issue today -- and your legislators need to hear from you Supporters can call/fax/email their representatives on the House Telecommunications Subcommittee.
Contact info at: http://saveaccess.org/node/2109

Or get your Congressmembers' info at http://www.congress.org!
Some suggested talking points:

1) Please take action now to remedy State-wide Cable Franchise legislation that is resulting in funding cuts and the loss of channels and facilities for Public, Educational and Governmental Access TV (PEG) stations around the country. Local communities demand more local media - take steps to improve PEG and LPFM capabilities around the country!

2) Keep PEG channels accessible to all local residents! Don't allow cable and phone companies to relegate these channels to obscure digital channels and at an increased cost to subscribers. Rates for "Basic Cable" service must be protected and must include PEG and local broadcast channels.

3) Please ensure that PEG channels remain accessible to all viewers! AT&T has eliminated close captioning and SAP capabilities on their carriage of PEG channels.

Opening on Jackson County Committee of Citizen Involvement: Apply Now!

The County Commissioners are reactivating the Committee for Citizen Involvement whose role is to increase the quantity of  Citizen involvement in county land use matters and to educate the public about land use matters and processes.  The open position is "citizen at
large".  County land use is unfortunately largely ignored by city  dwellers, and as a result approvals can sometimes be gained with too little scrutiny.  But what happens in county areas greatly affects traffic, air quality, wild life preservation efforts, water quality in streams, our views, and agricultural potential everywhere.

No one becomes good at land use issues without spending a lot of time in meetings to hear testimony concerning the various points of view.  And if the public is not involved, land use hearings can become solely the forum for those who have a financial interest in development in county areas, i.e the applicants and those they hire such as land use
planners, realtors, attorneys, and others who will financially benefit from a given development.

For those who want a start in becoming familiar with county land use issues, being on the Committee for Citizen Involvement will offer that. To apply contact Susan Lee 774-6943 or call the Commissioners at 774-6116.

Send this link to a friend to join our once-a-week email listserve. We try very hard to only send out one email a week. Sometimes, KSKQ events do not make it into the newsletter and we might send out that one event to our members, supporters & producers.
