I had the opportunity to return to St John this past winter/spring. An island we lived on, well, lived on a boat in several of its bays. Great place, and we still have a bunch of friends there. I managed to secure a project to build my first hooch on the island. With no native timber bamboo, the complete hooch was built using dimensional lumber- pre-fabricated on St. Thomas and brought over on the ferry. I did manage to incorporate local bamboo into the finished product, as lamps, plant hangers, counter supports, a chandelier, and a bamboo bed. The penthouse bedroom is completely screened in, and the lower kitchenette features hot and cold running water-collected off the roof and stored in hanging split bamboo supported carboys. Cool project!
