The Darjeeling Limited was recommended to me by a friend and coworker. He said it was quirky, funny and off-beat. He nailed it in three words. I couldn't have summed it up better, except to add the word "good".

Darjeeling is Directed by Wes Anderson. Think of the "Royal Tenenbaums", "The Life Aquatic" and you can begin to picture the absolute deadpan hilarity of this movie.

Starring Owen Wilson (pre-breakdown), Adrian Brody, and Jason Schwartzman. This is the story of three very different brothers who join each other on the "Darjeeling Limited" for a Spiritual journey through India. These guys, as the story unfolds, you figure out have had a very difficult time getting along, communicating, and just generally dealing with life after their father died and their mother fled to a convent.

The story develops as each brother introduces us to his particular mental status and defect, but they are pretty cohesive as a dysfunctional family, that can barely stand each other.

They do have some substance abuse issues with over the counter Indian medicine, muscle relaxers and cough syrup. And then there's the incident with the snake and the pepper spray (you'll just have to see it) that ultimately gets them kicked off the train with their 11 suitcases in tow.

The real journey begins at that point, and the brothers learn to interact with the past, present and what to do with their future, all the while dealing with their figurative and literal baggage in the process.

I liked this movie, even though it took about 1/2 an hour just to figure out what in the world was happening. I guess Wes Anderson must have a thing about letting you know the story line before it happens. I also liked the little vignettes from other faces you recognize. Angelica Houston  and  Bill Murray made appearances in the film. The colors and camera work were amazing. The little surreal moments were fantastic and perfectly placed for the ultimate  "you never know what life holds moments."

I think the ultimate message of this uplifting little movie is; leave the past behind, pick up your life wherever you are and face your future.... And THAT, my friends, is a great message to glean from any story.

Go rent it, if you're feeling existential and artsy on a Wednesday evening.

I give The Darjeeling Limited 3.5 Golden Popcorns out of 5.

Who me?
