Gary Phillips on Politics Noir

Los Angeles crime fiction writer Gary Phillips is on tour with his latest, an anthology titled Politics Noir: Dark Tales from the Corridors of Power, published this month by Verso. Meet him at Bookwagon New and Used Books in Ashland on Friday July 11, 2008 at 6pm and get the real story from Gary Phillips on political corruption, the LA underground and life in the city of angels.

Just in time for the 2008 presidential campaign, Politics Noir includes short stories by Ken Bruen, Mike Davis, Robert Greer, Twist Phelen and others. The anthology also includes Phillips’ short story, Swift Boats for Jesus.

Nathan Cain says in his Independent Crime review, "This sharp collection of short stories is just what political junkies need for a fix. The stories are set in both the past and present, and the characters are both real and imaginary, but they all show the dark side of power and the lengths people will go to get it and keep it."

Lately Phillips' also been writing a serial novella for The Nation online called Citizen Kang: Love, Politics and Death from LA to the Beltway. The novella will be released in chapters throughout the 2008 presidential campaign.

Phillips is the creator of the Ivan Monk series, featuring an African American investigator who owns an LA donut shop and the Martha Chainey mysteries, set in Black Las Vegas. In addition, this prolific and successful writer edited Akashic Book's 2005 anthology, The Cocaine Chronicles, has written two comic book series, and is well known for his scholarship in popular culture.
