Documents a tinyfamily-owned and run Greenwich Village establishment that has become aneighborhood institution. Shopsin's is the quintessential New Yorkrestaurant, inhabited by the equally prototypical New York chef, Kenny. The Falstaff of his domain, Kenny is a person who can definitely becalled a "character." Irascible and intermittently brilliant, hestarted cooking to earn a few extra bucks and now makes more than ninehundred different items, including hundreds of soups and ethnic comfortfood of every variety, from matzoh brie to postmodern pancakes. But hisculinary legerdemain is only half of what you get when you enter hisdomain, and heaven help you if it's with a group of five. A truekitchen philosopher, Kenny's observations about life, politics, food, and sex give this film a vitality that doesn't let up. But after 35years, Shopsin's has lost its lease and must face a difficult decision.

"a rare, hilarious and ultimately touching look at the kind of American iconoclast that barely exists anymore"
James Greenberg, The Hollywood Reporter
