Ihave long been curious about the adorable bright yellow restaurant, theMustard Seed in Jacksonville, and my partner and I were finally able toenjoy lunch there this week. From the outside of the restaurant the bigwindows and sunny patio gives an immediate message of warmfriendliness. Inside the dĂ©cor is country family diner, minus thecounter seating. This is the type of place were older farmers probablycome in for their daily cup of coffee, and one can catch up on thelocal gossip. This small restaurant was mostly empty at our late lunchhour. A very friendly server and the cook/owner Tammy greeted us andinvited us to sit at one of the vinyl tables, set with ketchup andmustard. Burgersand hot and cold sandwiches are the staple of lunch menu. This is notthe restaurant for the raw food vegans out there, but if you arelooking for a quiet, casual burger or sandwich for lunch, the MustardSeed is a good choice. I ordered the Rueben and enjoyed the authenticcorned beef, âjust like grandma used to make.â My sandwich was warm andtoasty; perfect comfort food. My partner enjoyed the roasted turkey andavocado sandwich loaded with fresh ingredients. All sandwiches comewith a bag of chips, but for a little extra, we substituted a side ofdelicious potato salad, that was enough to share.
TheMustard Seed is the kind of place where it wouldnât take long to becomea âregular.â The staff was casual, and sincerely friendly, and evenhappily giving directions to a lost tourist who wandered in. The foodwas prepared freshly and service was fast, but not at all rushed. If Ilived in Jacksonville I might hope to become a âregular,â but I willcertainly return for lunch the next time I arrive early to wait in lineat Britt. Located at 130 N 5th street in Jacksonville, just off California Street. Open until 2pm, everyday except Sunday. 541-899-2977
